In this Oxacan rug we experiment with a looser weave which gives it a translucent effect and allows one to see the inner threads.
Shades of red predominate this rug and they are made from cochineal, one can see the yellow strands inside that are made by dying the wool yarn with zacatlaxcalli (Cuscuta tinctoria) and also the green tones made by mixing zacatlaxcalli with indigo. We make our own 100% natural dyes from plants, minerals and insects that we collect in the area.
All our rugs are made on pedal looms in our homes in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca.
This rug is thinner because of its looser weave so it can also be used as a bedspread or a decorative throw for a sofa or chair or even a decorative wall hanging.
