Participation in “Hilos Cruzados” (Crossed threads): A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH TO SUSTAINABLITY AND INNOVATION IN TEXTILES BETWEEN ARTISANS AND DESIGNERS”

During three workshops in May, June and November of 2017 artisans from the silk cooperatives, Benhi and Wen Do Sed from San Miguel Cajonos and San Pedro Cajonos, and designers from Germany and Mexico met in Oaxaca to jointly develop tools for elaborating sustainable and innovative textile products.

Video of the process for “”Lazo””

“From Teotitlán del Valle Oaxaca she has been making rugs on a pedal loom, using natural dyes, since she was thirteen. Josefina learned this skill from her mother who, in turn, had learned it from her mother. The Jimenez family has been engaged in this craft for five generations.

Master Weaver Josefina is one of the most recognized artisans of her community for her use of natural dyes like the cochineal, the blue snail. She has received several awards including the Grand Prize, the Benito Juarez prize, the Natural Dyes of the Southwest prize, among others. She has been invited to various conferences and symposiums to share her extensive knowledge of natural dyes.

“Josefina Jiménez is a Zapotec woman from the municipality of Teotitlán del Valle, in Oaxaca. They call her Master Josephine even though she only has an elementary school education. As a child she could not continue her studies because she only spoke Zapotec and not Spanish. She learned the craft from her parents, both of whom weave rugs. She is 56 years old and is considered an example to follow since she has promoted organizations of women who work with wool on pedal looms.”
