Patterns that represent the stairs to the underworld, the place of the dead. As is the case in many pre-Hispanic cultures, for the Zapotecs this in not a place of torments. Death is a journey. When people die they are buried with a bag containing tortillas to eat and coins to pay for the passage. It is a journey to reunite with those who went before us and among many other things one must traverse the stairs depicted in these designs.
