This rug with its traditional design is replete with symbolisms depicting Teotitlan’s importance. In the center of the diamond shape a dot represents Teotitlan as a ceremonial center along with Monte Alban and Mitla. In each corner of the diamond there are other diamonds with crosses that represent the four cardinal points and it also has a conch shell which was used in pre-Hispanic times to call people to gatherings or festivities.
For us, including the conch shell in a rug design represents a way of communicating with others.
All our rugs are made on pedal looms in our homes in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca. Given their thickness and resistance they can be used in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and hallways or hung on walls as decorative tapestries. Because of their resistance and thickness, our floor mats are ideal to be used in hallways, the living room, and bedrooms. Because of their patterns and beauty, our rugs can be also used as decorative elements on walls.
We make our own 100% natural dyes from plants, minerals and insects that we collect in the area. We weave rugs with a wide range of colors, combining dyed yarns with natural colored yarns (white, grey, black). We make rugs with a wide range of colors achieved combining or self-made natural dyes with wool’s natural colors black, gray, and ivory.
