Zapotec Sun

This wool rug is an original design based on Zapotec iconography representing radiance.

As seen from above the sun is in the middle; towards the edges there are depictions of natural elements: leaves, mountains, seeds and birds.

This rug has predominately brown tones that are made from green nut shells, but there are also cream colors and light oranges that are made from achiote seeds, to a lesser degree we can see shades of yellow made from pericon bathed in cochineal and in the middle, inside the sun, there are shades of blue made from indigo.

All our rugs are made on pedal looms in our homes in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca. Because of their resistance and thickness, our floor mats are ideal to be used in hallways, the living room, and bedrooms. Because of their patterns and beauty, our rugs can be also used as decorative elements on walls.

We make our own 100% natural dyes from plants, minerals and insects that we collect in the area. We weave rugs with a wide range of colors, combining dyed yarns with natural colored yarns (white, grey, black). We make rugs with a wide range of colors achieved combining or self-made natural dyes with wool’s natural colors black, gray, and ivory.
